Slavery in Australia occurred mainly in the plantations of sugar in the northern part of the country. Many of the indigenous Australians from different parts of the country were kidnapped and were eventually forced to work. The kidnapping and the forcing of people to work were termed as slavery due to the payment offered to them. The method of payment was extremely uncertain as sometimes these people were not paid at all and there were also times when the wage was reduced which was confiscated later. Slavery has become widespread not only in Australia but also across the globe. Slavery has its existence along with certain forms of it. These forms differ from one another but the consequences of each of them are the same.From the last few decades, slavery has been on the rise and it has led to disastrous outcomes (Rodriguez, 1997). The main goal of this essay is to understand the various forms of slavery and the reasons behind its proliferation.
There are mainly five forms of slavery which is presently occurring all over the world. Each of these forms represents the true essence of enslavement. The victims of slavery are involuntarily forced to work and are also unable to leave once they have started working (Pallua & Zach, 2010). It should also be highlighted that slavery is no longer practiced legally in any part of the world but illegally it is still present. The victim confronts with extreme threat of mental, physical and emotional punishments and they are abused and deceived regularly. If the labour of any person is exploited by unfair means, any earlier consent to work for the enslaver becomes irrelevant as these victims are now held against their consent (Gans, 2011).
Although, slavery is not protected any longer legally in any part of the world but the exploitation and the punishment meted out to the victims is same. Types of slavery may include: forced labour, bonded or debt labour, sex slavery, child slavery and domestic servitude.
