Design, Volume and variety
The components of operation are visibility, variation, volume and variety. In considering design of products through operations management, variety and volume forms the most important components. Most often, greater varieties are produced at lower volumes while greater volumes produced usually correspond tofew varieties.Volume and variety also correspond to the nature of impact caused by the products, services and process involved in producing the products.The performance objectives of products can be adequately assessed through the volume level and the varieties produced. The speed, cost, dependability, quality and flexibility of production are shaped considerably by volume and variety of operations positions (Penlesky & Treleven, 2005).
Factors that influence volume and variety
Quality in relation to volume and variety is usually possible under low volumes and greater varieties as is the case with architectural works. An architect is usually concerned with the aesthetic quality of appearance of infrastructural structures and the validity of the design details.A product such as electric power product supply is of high volume and low variety. The product’s quality must remain high with specific defined form in terms of frequency, voltage, etc.Quality definition has over time evolved from the usual specification and performance measures of services and goods towards compliance to the predefined standard.Even as production shifts from low volumes and greater varieties to the high volumes and low variety production operations (Anupindi,2006).
Speed in production process and delivery of products in a timely manner for all the clients with products meeting the clients’ specifications is critical.It is important therefore to assess the amount of work that goes into the project in order to have a clear time frame within which the project will be completed. In the context of some products such as electricity,the service has to be literally delivered instantly and continuously.A power generation and distribution company can never request clients to wait for service delivery. It has to be a continuous process throughout. Speed may therefore be interpreted as the ability to deliver products at a negotiated time in the form of low volume and great variety functions. This is however considerably different where instant and continuous delivery in the context of high volume and few variety functions is concerned (Penlesky & Treleven, 2005).
