The role of events management in the Tourism and Hospitality industry is analysed by means of applying the Event Life Cycle concept to a case study. The case study selected is the 2014 Winter Olympics that was held in Sochi, Russia. Sochi was the event site for the 2014 Winter Olympics. It is one of the longest cities of Europe and sprawls across an approximate 148 kilometres. The city is basically a resort city. The hosting of the Olympics at Sochi is a first-time occurrence for Russia. With a population of around 400,000 in Sochi, there were obvious benefits considered for the place when it was proposed for hosting the Winter Olympics. The city has a cluster near the Black sea where the ice events were held and a second cluster was identified for the skiing and sliding events near the Polyana Mountains. The report seeks to analyse the formation stage, the growth and the staging stage of the Sochi Winter Olympics.
The analysis of Event Life Cycle Stages
The site and the event selected fits into one of three categories of events. Getz & Wicks (1994) presented three main categories of events based on the sector such as private, public and voluntary. Now the event selected, the Winter Republics at Sochi falls across different categories and can further be called as a special event. A special event occurs one-time or less frequently. Such forms of events are usually outside normal organization opportunities available to a sponsor. They would be for purpose of leisure, for economic aspects as well as exists to present a socio-cultural experience. 2014 Winter Olympics at Sochi, Russia can in all contexts be defined as a special event as this is a onetime event happening in the site, and is defined across many aspects. It is definitely a socio-cultural experience too. Getz (2008) argued for the importance of planned events when he presents his event life cycle. The four stages of the event life cycle model are 1) Formation, 2) Growth, 3) Staging and 4) The Future Development.
The formation stage is the first stage where the idea for the event in a site is assessed for. It is also that stage where the feasibility is assessed. Sochi had the proper land expanse, and the temperature and settings to host the winter Olympics and this was a city that was mainly in the need for a makeover as evident in how the city lacked basic infrastructure. In 2007 before the Olympics, Sochi was basically a seaside resort with little transportation facilities and literally lacked major venues to host events (Taylor, 2014). However, since it did have those natural amenities that could make it a good destination for Winter Olympics, a bid was placed from the Russian end.
