NET profit margin of a firm shows the residual revenue which is kept by a company after meeting all the costs and operating expenditures including selling and distribution costs. The higher margins would indicate effectiveness and efficiency of a firm’s continuous operations. In 2012, the firm had a net margin of 33.3%. But in 2013, the ratio went down to 22%. From 2013 to 2014, the margin recovered to reach 26.3% approx, but in 2015 the overall downward trend continued with the ratio reaching a low 9.8% approx, which means that the BHP Billiton’s profit margin has gone down by over 66% in the last 4 years. Given the global recessionary scenario and Chinese market downturn in recent times, the revenue for the firm is not expected to recover considerably anytime soon. So in the next few years, at least till 2020, the firm is expected to operate with similar profit margins(Watson, 2012).
Return on assets (ROA) signifies how well a company utilises its assets to earn profits. A higher margin would indicate a better utilisation and continued lower margins would indicate towards general overcapitalisation of assets(kimmel, 2012).
ROA of BHP Billiton has seen continued decline between 2011 and 2015. While the ratio showed a healthy return of 23.3% in 2011, it started rapid decline in 2012 when the ROA has gone down to 12%. Since then the firms ROA has continued to decline and in 2015, the return hit an all-time low of 3.52%. This shows that BHP Billiton has been traditionally asset heavy and its investments in the assets are in the long term perspective. Thus, if there is a reduction in revenue because of macro reasons, the firms ROA would suffer heavily.
