Income Inequality in Canadian Immigrants
Other Causes of Educational Inequality
The legal status of the immigrants is also responsible in educational attainment of children. Access to proper education and to licensed schools is also denied to such children who do not have legal status. According to a study, “a review of Mexican migration to the United States concluded that legal status negatively affects the academic achievement of children of unauthorized immigrant parents (and particularly mothers)” (Bartlett, 2015). The educational gap leads to hinder employment and earnings of such population.
Motivation is the most important factor that can be targeted for improved learning. There are many cross-disciplinary theories that have been made in order to understand motivation. Some of these theories claim that students can be motivated by material rewards, they may also have wish to enhance their prestige and power, interesting task, getting respect from people or recognition. No single motivation theory could explain the motivation completely. As every person is different from one another, they have different desires and aims. Students are not completely social, political, economical or psychological beings, “God made man to go by motives, and he will not go without them anymore than a boat without steam, or a balloon without gas. Find out what motivates man, touch that button to turn the key that makes men achieve” (Williams, & Williams, 2011)
The motivation of children in education is determined by their socio-economic background, attendance, family condition and many other factors. Some of the scholars have also recognized other motivation factors such as rewards, praise and punishments (Gardiner, 2012). The educational inequality in Canada has deteriorated the student’s motivation to peruse higher degrees. There are many motivation theories that help to motivate children for higher academic levels. The educational inequality in Canada must be removed. Children from low income families and high income families get different environments at their homes (Gardiner, 2012). The economic condition of parents affects the social, cognitive and intellectual development of children.
The children from different race and ethnicity must be given better learning environment. It is very important to understand the needs of children. The children, for whom English is the second language, must be taught by teachers who can explain them in their native language. Children should be encouraged to enhance their writing, reading and learning skills (Gardiner, 2012). The discrimination made on the basis of gender or race should not be encouraged by teachers and school staffs. The goal setting theory must be implied, which may help children to understand and set their educational goals. Learning process could not be successful till the time children are not motivated.
Motivation is the key factor, which is very important for quality education and success in higher studies. The role of student and teacher should not be taken in the traditional way. The environmental factors provided to students at schools must be improved. Healthy and friendly environment for students of different race, gender and ethnicity must be given. The students must be motivated for every little achievement and for improvements in schools. Parents also play an important role in motivating and encouraging children. Teachers should interact with parents, so that they can help their children to understand the importance of education. Educational inequality is leading towards frustration, less interest in learning and creating less skilled workforce for future. The goals must be set for every child in schools despite race, class, gender and ethnicity.
