“While advances in scientific research have led to some new and exciting treatments that have enlarged and enhanced the quality and length of human life, we must not lose sight as to what we are trying to accomplish” – Nathan Deal
What form of waste is generated in your kitchen?
Are you interested in technology to control the amount of waste that is generated in your kitchen?
Of what percentage of waste generated in your kitchen is recyclable, why do you think so?
What is your opinion on food shortage and the food shortage crises?
Do you think the food shortage problem will affect everybody?
If a technology was developed to help you reduce food wastage, would you be willing to buy it?
If a technology was developed, and it requires installation space in your kitchen, would you be willing to accommodate it?
How many days in a week do you cook, and do you always use fresh food or food with a shelf life?
If a technology was developed to help recycle food, would you prefer it to be in the form of a phone application
Would you be willing to support the development of such a technology?
To identify the form of recycling help that is required in the kitchen
To identify the means of waste reduction by understanding people patterns in the kitchen
To understand the form of technology that would satisfy the people in the kitchen (should it be a book, an application used on the computer, the mobile phone, etc.)
To identify if recycling technology can be supported by the current housing situation of the participants
Everybody has a kitchen but not everybody cooks. So the selection of people for this interview can be done by means of a convenience sampling where people who cook in their kitchen daily or on at least on alternative days will alone be selected. The rationale for this selection is that since they cook, they will be aware of the form of waste that will be generated.
Task and Interview Outline
The theme for which the interview is prepared is that of “Developing the recycling technology in order to recycle, renew and reuse of kitchen scraps and providing a sustainable habitat for urban environment”. For this given theme, a semi-structured interview method has been prepared in order to collect data on the same. Justification of the interview method over the survey method has been presented.
The semi-structured interview has been selected here. The interview process is chosen over the survey process, as the need for research her is exploratory. The researcher needs to identify what form of recycle needs the participant has. This could be conducted in a more open way in the interview method. Also the attitudinal information of the participant can also be assessed if the interview method was used. The semi structured format has been used because the interview questions although is composed as orderly set, the interviewer might need to skip questions or might need shuffle the order based on the interviewee.
