  “Culture, of course, is an amorphous concept, even in the most rigorous theories of intercultural communication. Typically, it is defined as a symbolic system, which includes issues of perception, cognition, and understanding. Culture is not merely an abstract set of folk practices, nor a collection of touristy festivals…it is a set of symbolic systems, that serve not only to define and identify the culture and social structures, but also to articulate the synthesis of two essential parts of human culture, ethos and world view” (Kluver, 2004).

  An example was cited in the research work of Matthews & Tucker (2012) where the authors argue that perception will change how people view different cultures. The example is that of a cheerleading crew in North Korea who were on a bus stop. The crew stopped the bus to retrieve a picture of a leader from North Korea. The picture was getting wet in the rain. Authors Matthews & Tucker state that a majority of Americans might perceive the culture influenced act as being just an act (Matthews, & Thakkar, 2012). On the other hand, Koreans might state that the person who rescued the picture would have really felt something. So it is the individual perception (combined with our own culture) that will affect how one perceives another person’s culture motivated action. Cultural differences have to converge when the businesses become global; however in the meantime it is necessary for society to understand the differences that are seen are just because of their own perception and not because of the culture and its difference in itself (Matthews, & Thakkar, 2012).

  A successful business leader is one who can meet the global challenges for the organization and at the same time must also be able to meet organizational objectives in a daily way. Global challenges introduced by cultural implication will need to be met by effective communication, however, meeting the daily challenges must not become the daily organizational objective. In this context it also becomes the role of the leader to ensure that they learn to navigate the cultural nuances and must also teach their employees these nuances (Pornpitakpan, 1999). This would mean that overall cultural intelligence for the business organization has to increase. Cultural values are what forms a person’s attitudes, and behavior. So according to researchers in improving the cultural intelligence of employees, the leadership ensures that physical boundaries and differences in culture in the workplace become a little more transparent. People become accountable for their actions. A good leader hence creates a culture of awareness of differences in the workplace and enables the employees to take up steps towards communicating with this awareness. Personal cultural bias might exist in the workplace and by this increased awareness it is possible to reduce the adverse effects of intercultural boundaries (Matthews, & Thakkar, 2012).
