The fifth principle laid down by Ernest was caring. This principle defines the fact that a college should be a caring community, a place where individuals place high value on the well-being of each member of the society and that the society should encourage providing services to the individuals of that community. Individuals build affection towards their college community because they regard fellow students a part of a big family. A college should conduct such practices that would encourage students and faculty to form a caring environment for that community. This caring environment can be constructed be frequent social events that are organized by different societies of the university. This would increase student interactions which would encourage the students to develop a sense of caring for their fellow students. Also, forming a strong relationship amongst students causes them to bear its fruits in life after university as well and enables that to maintain a relationship with their universities even after their graduation. An institute can ensure a caring environment from activities such as social events, extended hours for commuter, and small connections such as clubs and campus jobs. (Boyer)
The sixth and last principle that was provided by Ernest was the principle of a celebrative community. A college is a celebrative community where the heritage and the prestige of an institution are remembered and where rituals are carried out that affirms both tradition as well as change which are widely shared. Social events and activities, rites, ceremonies and celebrations unites the campus community through interaction and provides them with a sense of belonging which is something worthwhile and enduring for individuals in a community. All institutions and universities have a set of specific events that provides them with a sense of belonging such as convocations, orientations, alumni reunions. This makes individuals feel as if they are more than just students in fact they are a part of a whole community. For instance, Harvard University provides its graduated with rings thus forming their own cultural heritage something that keeps them connected to each other even after their graduations. In our university, our alumni program ensures that the entire graduating batch still stays in contact thereby creating a sound community. (Boyer)
