  Elaboration Likelihood Theory

  Elaboration likelihood theory presents the argument that something is handled quite seriously and reflected on, but some things are followed very unconsciously. ELT theory helps one understand when an individual would use information in a critical and significant way and when they would just go with the information in a non-attached manner.

  People tend to evaluate information in two ways, one is the central route and the other is the peripheral route (Conner and Norman, 2005). The central route is where a person processes information in a critical manner. In this route, the person will receive information, think about it, weigh their arguments, reflect on it, and then make changes. They will pursue a course of action based on their critical thinking. In the case of the peripheral route, the person will not actively indulge in processing the information. The person will just receive information and leave it. They will make some changes, but will not be of personal relevance to them (Littlejohn and Foss, 2011). According to the elaboration likelihood model, the person who performs communication at the central route level will have quite persuasive communication. They will be motivated to speak about things on a personal level and will be able to concentrate on the issue better. Therefore, this form of preparation for communication makes the person present a strong case. They are seen as more positive in attitude and people can expect them to be more enduring and resistance. A person with more peripheral processing would appear to an audience as one who has a weaker attitude, and as one who is temporary and vulnerable when it comes to attitude and behavior.
