其中一些基本意识形态可以从Robinson(1998)和Beller(2011)的论述中看出。 Dirt is essentially a notion when certain objects are out of cohesion with the structured ordered form (Durham 2006). The key therefore to social order and social interaction is understanding and appreciation of the different cultures. It also requires insights of how different cultures react to change. Some cultures will seek to destroy that which cannot be explained, whilst some others will avoid what is different and unknown (Moffett, Fazio, and Wodehouse, 2003). . Other culture would brand the unknown as dangerous and avoid understanding.
Some of these basic ideologies can be seen in the arguments made by Robinson (1998) and Beller (2011). This is essentially manifested in different forms in everyday activities. A simple launderette is a symbolization of many key ideologies. In these common areas, individual members of the society carry out private activities in a public space. It also provides opportunity for people from diverse cultures to interact in this space. Interactions and levels of amicability are defined by the individual characteristics. Launderette provides space to facilitate harmonious interactions with strangers (Dempsey, 2008). Some people may find it difficult to interact with total strangers whilst for some it is a natural process. This indicates the reaction to a launderette in the urban environment explains the nuances of human emotion.
In Bruce Robinson’s (1998) he feels threatened by new technology. He feels a sense of discomfort to being confined with people in an alien space such as the launderette. From his standpoint he lacks the comfort of familiar space. It makes him feel insecure and be brings a knife as a means to protect himself. This makes him feel socially awkward because he knows he has a knife with him he feels even more discomfort and anxious. This action by the protagonist helps depict embarrassing exposure and anxiety one can have in the launderette while dealing with the filthy and dirty cloths. The launderette experience for Robinson is only one and half-hour. But he considers it to be the worst time of his life. In this situation, it is suggested that in many ways this reflects the process of architectural design, since a designer must satisfy the end-user and at the same time create space that offers a sense of security and welcome. In this instance the sheer openness of the launderette as a semi-public space could be compared to the design of contemporary space. For example, Robinson was reluctant to go the launderette because of fears about unwanted social contact. He feels a sense of shame and exposure. These are the essential elements in the design of public space (Carmona 2010). Effective public urban space promotes human social interaction whilst creating space that can be both private and public, in other words space within space, something as simple as a shaded bench with an open park. Even though perception of a place is largely dependent on individual perception, architectural designers can find ways to make these open public spaces less threatening. This is evident in Beller’s (2011) tale of the launderette, which for him forms part of the social fabric of his building. It a point that remains static in a changing world, steadfast as a private space when needed, open to social interaction when sought. It is suggested that this work, reveals the nature of good design and suggests that key is for the designer to understand the multi-purpose and multi-functional nature of a space. From this the social, cultural and functional needs of that community can be met.
