Situational context for this case study is in a causal family restaurant. In this restaurant five students aged from 20 to 25 are seated and engaged in active communication. There is discussion about Micheal Moore documentary Capitalism a love story has been divulged in detail in the conversation. Conversational analysis and the speech act theory have been explored in detail in this case study.
Based on the conversational analysis concept, this was a casual conversation that had taken place. There was turn taking model that was gradually developed in this course of communication. Since it was more than two people involved in the conversation the conversation was not a binary communication between two people. It was based on the multi party analysis. It was observed during this conversation that the people followed the non-verbal cues. The topic of discussion was based on the capitalism. Critical discussions and views about capitalism were exchanged between the people. It was found that in this conversation that the people each took turns naturally to speak for or against the notions of capitalism. These notions of capitalism were found to be a heated debate between the people.
In this story there is discussion of the corporate dominance explained. The people of America have been affected owing to the impact of capitalism in the societies. It shows how people face the consequences of capitalism. It explains how the people pay the price with giving up of jobs, homes and savings of the people. It also shows how the life of the average American family is exposed owing to the impact of globalization. It explains how the people life has been impacted by certain decisions taken by the big corporations and the government.
Pragmatics aspect of the social language skills are used in everyday daily interactions with other members of the society. Pragmatics includes the language spoken, actual content, social context of the content and the relevance of the content to the situation (Kasher, 1998). Pragmatics is integrated to many facets of communication (Cappelen, & Lepore, 2008). It is interlinked to social customs, linguist and how they are intended by the people in the society. In this case study there was analysis of how the people perceived a particular documentary. The elements and contents of the documentary speech were considered in this analysis.
The film “Capitalism a love story” by Micheal Moore has been divulged in detail in this analysis. There is discussion of how the different elements of the story and how the information has been presented. This discussion takes place among peers in a restaurant setting. In this analysis, there will be retrospections, reflections and applications of the theory while viewing a documentary video. One will be on the actual documentary and the other will be as to how the audience perceive the information in the documentary and how it causes an impact to the people.
In the case study all the participants who had been a part of the conversation ensured that each of their discourse or speech was grammatically sound. The issue of language competency was not there in this situation. Even though that language competence has not been probed n this analysis, it has been considered to ensure that the people were grammatically sound. This was a casual conversation among the peers, and owing to this they followed all the mandatory social conditions and conventions of speech patterns. It was a causal speech between friends and peers. There was no formal method of speech that was practiced. It was a casual talk between friends. The people in the conversation were competent and followed all the mandated forms of the socio linguistic and strategic conventions.
