In the Voltaire version, the story line was propagated as a tragedy and incorporated the love theme. Until then, it was assumed that the notion of tragedy was a western ideology. It was not generally symbolized in the Chinese tradition. The universal themes of family name, revenge, loyalty, altruism were epitomized in these culture. The moral dilemma and the conundrum people face in times of adversity were discussed in detail in these story. The story theme of Orphan of Zhao is found to resonate with the European Cultures. The cultural values that are espoused in this story is universally accepted owing to the fact that it represents some of the core moral values of humans virtues and value system.
Central theme of “revenge”, “family values”, “altruism” and “virtues” were the common elements that were found in both these cultures. However, there was the addition of the love theme into this storyline. This shows the differences in audience expectation. In the original adaptation, the people were satiated by only the revenge and the political aspects of the storyline. Nonetheless, the French and the European cultures preferred eclectic combination of other elements. This is seen in the comedy, tragedy and the love themes. The concept of tragedy that was common in the European literature was not as common in the Chinese cultures. In terms of this factor, the “The Orphan of Zhao” was different. It was because of these common political ideologies that made the storyline and the plot become popular in French culture and the Chinese culture. In the Chinese and French cultures, there is undue importance given to the notions of heritage and were instrumental in removing the monarchy that was incompetent. There is a general attitude in the people against anarchist and the elitist in the society. This story shows how a certain claim was destroyed and how the virtues of the common people were more prominent than the rulers. There is a gentle reminder that the people in power are necessarily people with good virtues.
