In the context of an interview, it is necessary to both record the interview and also make notes of the same. Making notes at the time of the interview will be helpful to record interviewer perspectives exactly at the moment the interviewee responds. The recorded interview will be useful to extract more detailed information.
The deliverables are, the interview form, the consent form for the interview, the raw data of the interview, the extracted or coded data from the interview.
The interview method was selected for data collection. The interview method is one where semi- structured form if used. The strength of this form of a method for data collection is that it helps to fill the gap in knowledge that currently exists or that would happen when investigating by means of other data collection methods. Now the very purpose of undertaking a critical research is to find some knowledge data that has either not been discovered and studied, or that has not been studied extensively or that has been studied but is seen to be lacking in some ways and hence a critical research analysis is necessary to evaluate it. In the current research context, waste and recyclables and related technology are the existing knowledge. However, in this research, the purpose is to identify how to introduce a technology to fit the needs of the participants who cook in their kitchen regularly. Therefore, there is a knowledge gap created to find out what would suit them, depending on their needs in the kitchen.
The semi-structured form is less flexible compared to the unstructured form and at the same time is not as rigid as the structured form. This will help in the collection of such data that would be helpful for researcher which cannot be obtained in a survey. For instance, based on the way the interviewee seems to focus on some specific data, the researcher can make a note of it, and move on directly to those questions in the list first. In the framing of questions, a form of storytelling and a form of structural approach is used. This approach is better suited for the researcher as the story telling style would make the interviewee more comfortable and the structural approach helps the researcher understand the participants in a sounder manner. “Rapport with another person is basically a matter of understanding their model of the world and communicating your understanding symmetrically.” Therefore, it will be necessary for the researcher to first help the interview subject become a little more comfortable in the setting. Once this is achieved, the interview would be more flowing. Since the research is going to be semi-structured, this form of a rapport achieved before the beginning of the interview could be sustained better.
