PM 2.5 in Beijing

Beijing is the capital of China and it is an international metropolis. The population of Beijing is over 19 million. It is one of the major cities of China and as we have seen that like all the metro cities of the world Beijing is also facing a major problem of Air pollution. Particulate Matter is the major pollutant which is present in the air and is creating a problem for all the residents of the Beijing. There are two types of Particulate matter (PM) i.e. PM10 and PM2.5. Pollutant PM10 is spreading in the entire city because of the dirt, smoke, and dust which come from factories and farming.  Poisonous organic compounds, smelting and processing of metals, burning of plant materials and forest fires are responsible for PM2.5. In the first six months of the year it has been observed that there is an average of PM2.5 level of 102 micrograms per cubic meter in Beijing. The PM2.5 in the entire country is around 35. We can see that Beijing is the most effected city in the country. The safe limit of PM2.5 recommended by the World health Organization is around 10 which is much lesser that already existing PM2.5 pollutants in the state.

Health of the citizens gets affected more by PM2.5 as compared to PM10. It has been studied that the smaller the air particle is, the more are the chances of it entering into our lungs (Kaiser, 2000). These particles are responsible for respiratory problems in citizens and sometimes it also leads to cardiac failure. It has been researched that there are more than 500,000 deaths per year in the entire world because of the pollutant PM2.5 (Dockery, 1993).
