Twentieth century, the later times has seen the increasing popularity of gay marriages, or same sex marriages like it is known. Since in many parts of the world it was nowhere near to legalization, the religious ceremonies became the method in which these marriages were carried on. But one of the first legislations which were ever made in context of same sex marriage was back in 2001 in Netherlands (Heaphy, Smart and Einarsdottir, n.d.). Though the polls in favor of same sex marriage have been increasing all around the world, none of the Asian countries have enacted any law of any kind in its favor. South Africa is the only African country to do so along with many others like Norway, Portugal, Ireland, France, Canada, Belgium, Argentina, Luxembourg, Denmark, Mexico, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Iceland and the United States of America being the other few. Though Finland has a law of this kind, it has not been brought into force.
Apart from the point that certain countries allow same sex marriages and while the major cannot, the point remains that same sex marriage is something which should be made legal. Not only to keep the concept of marriage equality alive, but there are several valid points which favor same sex marriages and thus give rise to the implication that same sex marriage should be made legal. Some of the factors which favor same sex marriages have been further discussed.
When one views from the religious point of view, one can claim that thee creator in whom majority of the people believe in created everyone too be the same, which means that all human beings were made alike (Koppelman, 2006). When all the human beings are alike, each ones choice for anything should be respected and should be given the same status. Thus whether one prefers same sex marriage or opposite sex marriage, both should be made legal keeping in mind the quality which has been endowed upon the human beings by nature itself.
Preferences and choices are varied in nature. There might not be people but each ones choices is their own and it is very personal in nature. Thus if a person prefers a man over woman in a marriage, and wants to settle down with a person of the same sex, or vice versa, this is something which should be respected in either case. Whether someone eats a pizza or a burger, is their own personal choice, therefore whether someone marries a person from the opposite sex or from the same sex, it is their personal choice. And thus should be made legal for the better functioning of all the individuals of the society.
