Both internal sources and external sources of information would be used when planning for sustainability management policy (Azar et al., 1996). Primarily external sources would be used to understand how an environmental sustainability policy could be created. This would involve researching through existing policies, or frameworks such as that of the samples of different organizations, educational and otherwise. Data would also be collected from government websites, regulation sites, legislation sites and more. These external sources of data would be helpful for SCEI to identify the ways environment sustainability initiatives could benefit the organization, and accordingly different strategic planning could be done. Internal sources of information are information collected of both strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities internal to the organization when it comes to implementation of environmental sustainability plans (Milne, et al., 2006). Now in terms of opportunities and strengths, it is seen that the management is very much interested in implementing an organizational sustainability implementation. The management is seen to be interested in the plan which means that they would be willing to provide utmost cooperation for implementing the different actions. Some weaknesses and threats exist because there is sustainability related issues spread across many areas of working within SCEI.
For instance, in the case of the use of electrical equipment, it is identified that the equipment is used in a way that does not show optimized use, or energy conservation. All electrical equipment is switched on irrespective of their usage. Secondly, when using the printer, the SCEI personnel are not trained to arrange for course material printing on double sides, they print it on single sides and also make use of colour printing when printing for internal purposes which are again not a necessity. While there are issues from the electrical department end, in the case of transportation and commutation, almost all the staff drives to college leading to an overfilled carpark. Currently, the toilets do not have low flush arrangements or hand driers which could conserve both water and paper. These form of information needs to be collected from different departments within SCEI and only when SCEI has all the information, they would be able to develop their strategies.
