  Significance of Research

  Thin-film cells normally absorb light 10-100 times more efficiently than silicon, allowing the use of films of just a few microns thick. Cadmium telluride (CdTe) technology has been successfully commercialized, with more than 20% cell efficiency and 17.5% module efficiency record. CdTe cells currently take about 5% of the total market. Other commercial thin-film technologies include hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) and copper indium gallium (di)selenide (CIGS) cells, taking approximately 2% market share each today. Copper zinc tin sulphide technology has been developed for years and it will still require some time for real commercialization. The emerging thin-film PVs are also called 3rd generation PVs, which refer to PVs using technologies that have the potential to overcome Shockley-Queisser limit or are based on novel semiconductors. The 3rd generation PVs include DSSC, organic photovoltaic (OPV), quantum dot (QD) PV and perovskite PV. The cell efficiencies of perovskite are approaching that of commercialized 2nd generation technologies such as CdTe and CIGS. Other emerging PV technologies are still struggling with lab cell efficiencies lower than 15%.

  Research is significant in that it enables the understanding of how an existing solar cell stability could impede the move towards sustained solar energy. Renewable energy sourcing is studied in current times because of the necessity and the world has to meet demands in energy sourcing. In current times, most of the energy needs are met by energy sourcing that pollutes the atmosphere, it causes major pollution in the world anywhere from increase in acid rain, increase in global warming, greenhouse effects and more. Such a form of increased dependency on fossil fuels will only lead to the destruction of natural resources. On the other hand, it is observed that there is ample solar energy being produced which is useful for the same reasons that the non-renewable energy fuels are. However, the challenges in using solar energy efficiently still remains the single most reason for their not so comprehensive use. In this context, it is necessary for the researchers and people using solar energy to focus on how to better the experience. Theoretical understanding on solar energy cells and what upsets the balance between optimal production of power and what challenges the stability of the cells have to be understood here. Being an eco-friendly technology, exploring its use will be significant for the current business world. More researches on the subject, based on the existing research evidence and experiments conducted directly on the cells would be helpful for improving industrial practices.
