Importance of Tourism to the Island of Ireland
As it is already being mentioned that it is the most important corporate plan for the country, this section will discuss some facts which prove this statement. In 2009, around 18.5 million domestic and foreign visitors visited the island of Ireland which contributed around €5.4 billion or £4.4 billion. This is a significant amount for the country and has a significant contribution to the GDP of the country. Almost half of this huge number of visitors directly contributed to the large earnings for the country and amounted to €3.4 billion or £2.8 billion and this amount is 64% of total revenue from the tourism to the country. The above mentioned figure came from the foreign visitors and the remaining amount was contributed from the domestic visitors which again make a significant contribution for the revenues.
Considering in the terms of GDP, the direct contribution from the tourism of Island of Ireland to the GDP of Ireland is around 3.3% while there is a direct contribution to the GDP of around 2.1% in Northern Ireland. Moreover, the tourism from Ireland Island contributes to the economy of the country in a multiplier manner since this amount spent by the foreign visitors helps in the increased circulation of money among the citizens of the country. It is also a good source of employment for the country as in 2009 it provided around 2 million jobs to the local public (Kotler, Philip, 2002, pp 250).
