Critical marketing in this context serves to bring back the distributive justice for society. Ethically speaking, marketing aimed to serve the interests of a few rather than the interests of everybody. Arnold and Fisher (1996) showed that the very essence of marketing aims at defining product segments and consumer segments, wherein it is understood that marketing research will only study few segments.
If a tobacco related product is being sold, then the marketing research undertaken by the tobacco related companies would probably look at how the marketing would only reach out to specific segments of people. It would target people already smoking or who want to smoke in the future. The tobacco industry has come under criticism already because of its portrayal of smoking in some advertisements using teenagers and young adults. This influences the young adults to make a decision towards smoking even if they don’t smoke originally. This form of marketing hence does not seem to understand the impact on the greater population.
