Chinese Middle Class

2.2.1 Emergence of Chinese Middle Class

The polarization in China dose not mean its middle class is incline to disappear,  actually, with the economy growing and the high education popularize, China’s middle class was virtually non-existent for a period but it was recreated in the late 1990s (Economist, 2011). Since most literatures describe the Chinese middle class as a group who gains the higher income, higher education and higher occupational prestige in China (CASS, 2009), the emergence of Chinese middle class is relate closely with China’s economy development and education level in recent decades.

The first reference to a modern Chinese middle class were made in the late 1980s after China implemented the reform and opening-up policy (Wang, 2011), hereby the following research is focus on China’s economy, education and occupation pattern during this period. In terms of economy growth, the figure 1.0 below shows that the GDP growth and income growth of mainland China begins to increasing around the end of 1980. Until 2006, the Chinese GDP is more than 20 times of it was in 1978, and the urban family’s income is around 10 times than 28 years ago.
