Internet of things can be used for machines. The machines could be office used machines or manufactory machines. The machines will contain sensors and software that can help people make some simple decisions. Singapore has industries that manufacture and also office based situations and hence could be helped in improving productivity at both ends.
Consider the concept of the smart printer which is an example of IoT machine that is used in the office workplace. In the case of a normal office workplace the people in the workplace might have rotation tasks in order to maintain the stationary. However, the printer would be a commonly used one and everybody would be using the printer. Employees have to order necessary ink cartridges with the suppliers on proper timings. When they fail to do so the employees would not be able to use the printer and hence the out of order notices on the machines. However, the smart printer can change all that. The smart printer will monitor the number of prints it has generated and will correlate with the cartridge type that has been input in and more. When printer finds itself running low on ink, it can order the ink by itself. The sensor has function to measure the ink usage, and software can search ink seller online and order the correct ink. Usually, a pre-approved list of suppliers would be added in order to ensure that the printer would mail out lists to those suppliers only. The printer will release office administrator from ink ordering job and provide more time for officer to do other tasks. (Flickr K., 2015).
The other example of loT usage is loT manufactory. From manufacture process to delivery process, loT machines can work together to increase workers’ productivity. The sensor can be used in monitoring machines. When other machines are not working well, the monitoring machines can find it and inform the worker at first time. If the potential dangers may happen, monitoring machine can make decision to stop the power of the target machine. For delivery, sensors can scan the products and assign the products to different package area. After packaging, the loT delivery machine can weigh the goods, calculate outcome and transfer goods to different areas and wait for car delivery. (Flickr K., 2015)The use of the loT technology on machines can significantly reduce human’s job and increase workers’ productivity in both offices and manufactories.
Remote mobile management will be possible with either the IoT machine -the printer or the machines in the manufactory sector. Managers and employees will not be able to be physically present to monitor all things with the machine. For instance, a manager might want a hard copy of a circular sent out to all the employees in the workplace but would not be present in the physical location. In such cases the manager could have the print output to smart printer sent out as a command from a mobile phone. The smart printer would possess certain calibration when a print command is received from certain users; it would send out a message or mail to the secretary of such a user or to a group of users, who would then collect the circulars or the prints that were sent from the manager. Alternatively, the manager might want some prints to be stored at his desk also. In the case of the manufactory industry, the manager would be able to use smart phones or other internet enabled device to check on machines and more. By these practices IoT connected employees will also achieve better collaboration in the workplace.
