The scenario presented here is one that a new product manager has accidentally come across information which makes him believe that documents of a spurious nature of another competitive company was got in an illegal manner. The boss of Michael Vasquez, the new product manager, stated that he got the files by getting into a private sector of a competitive company and downloaded material randomly that he felt was of interest. Later, the boss on realizing that Michael was suspicious reiterated which he got the documents is a colleague and had not hacked the network. The usage of competitor confidential data was in itself unethical and illegal. It was just as illegal and unethical getting the data by hacking into a network of using some inside informer.
In this scenario, Michael has asked to use these materials. The case study clearly stated that Michael was in a dilemma and he searched regulations and law or anything that could help him. The ethical dilemma of using the information was wrong and Michael understood both the ethical and the illegal nature of it, even if it meant that it would make the company more competitive. The first issue is that of whether Michael should use the information that was given to him by his boss. The second issue is that of whether he should report the issue. Now Michael is not sure whether the company would make use of such information again and he is also not sure whether he wanted to work with the company. Should he report the company irrespective of whether he stays and wants to continue, or can he leave the company as his personal ethics does not agree to it, and not report it? These are some of the critical ethical concerns in the case study that have to be addressed at this point.
