Some of the earliest memories that haunted the sleep of youth till day are the feel of sobs racking through the body of the mother to whom the child clung. The child slept secure in the protection of the arms it trusted. However, the child was not aware that the very arms that it was sleeping snugly in had been twisted and bruised brutally while the perpetuator breathed heavily and the victim sobbed quietly into the night. With the passage of time, the child grew and found this daily routine to be disturbing. Another few years and the child began coming to the defense of the mother. It was not long after that the child too began to be included in the verbal and physical abuse being perpetuated virtually every night in the household.
This was a recurrent nightmare in the lives of many of the children growing up in the ghetto where hard work, debt, disease and substance abuse were constant features of everyday life. All those children who were constrained while growing up in such circumstances learnt early in life to keep certain parts of their family’s lifestyle totally secret or subtly camouflaged. Never was the situation in the home discussed by the children or the victim of the violence (Bonomi, 2006, pp. 458–466). In fact, a conspiracy of total silence surrounds all deliberation or communication on the subject. These are all known facts of the life and more often than not follow a vicious circle that ensures perpetual misery for the victim and some form of vicious gratification. The worst aspect of this way of life is leaving indelible scars on the psyche of the children.
