In the year 1788 First Fleet arrived in Australia. Before the arrival of First Fleet people that were indigenous used to live on the mainland and also in the surrounding areas. People living in the north of the Islands were known as the Torres Strait Islanders. Other people lived on the mainland and were known as the Aborigines. The group was not the united one but was divided into approximately 500 different groups. Each of the group had its own culture and also had its own language.
This word “Aboriginal” was not a local word but it was mainly used by the people in Europe to describe the people who resided in Australia as mentioned earlier there were different groups. These groups had their own names and did not call themselves as Aboriginal. These people were black in colour and had never seen any white people before the year 1788. In the following section we will examine how the conflict arose between the two groups and what was result of that. Also the reasons for the devastation of the natives of Australia will be examined. Later in the essay the policies formed by the government during 1901 to 1960 are analysed.
