The romance and love are highly recognized in modernity.
The individual in the modern society have the liberty to select their life partners and not much importance is given to family. Marriage is completely a personal affair and while choosing a partner, people evaluate their understanding and happiness instead of family status. In contrast, in the traditional society the marriages had specific purpose behind continuing the ancestral clan. The marriages were done to increase the family prestige, status and wealth. Thus romantic love does not hold any importance in the traditional societies and in traditional analysis of marriage. The religion being an important element in the traditional society, thus one who turns away from marriage was considered to be turning away from God. Thus due to which, taking divorce from the spouse was also considered as sin. As people believed that life partner is chosen by God and leaving him or her is equal to disrespecting God. While in the modern societies, many people do not want to get married or are divorced. This is not considered as sin, while it is respected as the personal choice.
