The user of the space gets to use the market in a clearer way with the help of pathways, and the use is made justified with easier access to the site with perfect nodes and edges. The interaction is also seen to be executed with the help of landmarks that define the space used, and the user using the service. This makes the interception more clarified with the help of the five elements of Lynch that defines the user experience and the interaction one has with the space that is meant to be utilised.
Essay response 2
Mapping in the physical terms while designing landscapes, buildings, and parks is an interesting activity often compared with the cultural set up of a city or a country, as described by James Corner in his chapter “The Agency of Mapping: Speculation, Critique, and Invention” in the book Mappings (Corner, 1999).
Response to Corner’s essay
Mapping is seen as an important instrument to liberate the act of ill-equipped knowledge, to enrich the experience that often comes after various revisions are executed and implemented. The mappings bring out the unseen from the world and then uses it to redefine the planned design and often change the very intent of the design. Mapping is dealt with the act of redesigning and learning from past designs and flaws which come out while mapping. Corner stresses more on revision of mappings which helps to discover the unconscious which had remained hidden, and this further makes the subsequent process more fruitful. Mapping thus is considered to be contributing toward the essence of designs and its implementation. It makes the point clear that revisions are essential in mapping, which reveals that to the observer and analyser, which had remain hidden and would have remained so until the project completion (Chinn and Steenrod, 1966).
Optimistic revisions in mapping
Corner talks about the optimistic revisions of mappings which has the primary benefit of bringing in new ideas, emancipating the design, liberating the hidden potential, and making significant contribution to overall knowledge. The revisions make the new map look simpler and more informative, corrects past mistakes and gives a new image to the observer. The revised maps then become the origin of a refined and a knowledge bound information for the observer.
Agency of mapping
The agency of mapping is an instrument that brings about the gathering of information and executing information led maps. They are more aligned to the actual measurement on earth and the various dimensions that it requires, and also give a specific abstractness to the observer and the analyser. The efficacy of mapping by different people displays differential designs and socio-political structures on the map, which indicates the variable interpretation that comes after consistent revisions of the map. The map preparations by different people have had different repercussions. For example, Europeans and Americans prefer a map which displays their two countries in the center and indicate their sovereignty. They like maps to be prepared in ways which shows them superior and larger in size and span. Corner acknowledges that this preference for a personalised map displaying might is often rooted in patriotic reasons of overcoming. The author however does not debate much on the errors that are inconceivable and irreparable due to impossibility of measuring the extents of the earth, and thus the map thus prepared by the geographer will always look incomplete to the keen eye. The map might be repaired several times, but some errors will have to be accepted as a part of it due to the vastness of the planet and the immeasurability of specific regions.
