Social media is a crucial term considered for describing the category of media as per the interaction and conversation between individuals through online platforms. Social media are sources of media for enabling dissemination by social interacting, utilizing scalable and highly accessible techniques of publishing (Hermida et al., 2012). This topic of social media is specifically interesting in the field of journalism, influencing it in terms of news- breaking and communication tools. In the year 2009, in June, the state department of US contacted Twitter for delaying the schedule based maintenance across the service. This was the time when protestors were using Twitter angered by the disputed presidential election of Iran (Stassen, 2010). In the same year in July, a user of Twitter in Jakarta beat majority of the news organizations by his tweets on the Bali bombings. Since recently, Microsoft and Google started the integration of Twitter messages within their search engines, presenting real- time search . With the evolution of internet, the role played by journalists and the state of social media has been experiencing a flux constantly.
All of these events depict that news businesses respond by the use of social networks treating them as platforms for the delivery of content. News outlets have started utilizing social media as a hope of attracting and engaging the readers. With the continuous decline faced by newspapers in printed circulation, they have been collaborating with social networks as well. The aim of this research is to identify and evaluate the impact of social media on the journalism field, specifically in terms of communication. This will help journalists and related businesses to exploit the opportunity provided by using social media for communication.
