Corruption has eroded Nigeria’s economic gains. It has become a rampant issue over the decades. According to Ora (2015), in the year 2012, around 94 percent Nigerians thought that corruption is mainly due to their government. In 2013, the nation was deemed as the most corrupt nation with 144th rank in the Corruption Perception Index. Though Nigeria is the leader in oil and gas production, corruption has hampered this position, leaving the nation with theft and inefficiency.
Due to corruption, the audit papers of PriceWaterHouseCoopers into NNPC oil were not published. Around $20bn oil revenue of NNPC (Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation) was accused (Hall, 2015). In this context, it can be argued that the poor government leadership is the main issue of rising corruption in the Nigeria. Government is keen on developing the economy by utilising the resources like sewerage system, electricity, water, railroads, etc. This has continued to turn a blind eye in the corruption ranks (Tsiga and Bhadmus, 2016).
To tackle corruption, the new president has asked to start the investigation into the petroleum ministry of the country, where $20 billion oil revenue is missing. He is focusing on strengthening the existing anti-corruption institutions like Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of Nigeria to oversee the standout cases (Baker, 2015). Though President Muhamed Buhari is working hard to curb corruption, there is a need of many ways to eliminate this issue from the nation. Additionally, the lack of public sectors in Nigeria is also giving rise to corruption. Lack of accountability and improper governance in the tax system is giving rise to corruptible acts in Nigeria (Okekeocha, 2013). Hence, the Nigerian government should also focus on the public service provisions to decrease the corruption level and stimulate the economic growth of the nation.
Nigeria’s main challenges also include income inequality and social unrest which is also adding to the increase in the corruption of the nation. The income inequality has also raised poverty in the nation. The difference in income level between urban and rural areas of Nigeria is remarkably high. This is leading to economic problems like corruption and violence (Ucha, 2010). Therefore, on this basis, the government need to make some important schemes to increase jobs in the nation especially in rural areas and improve their pay scale. This would propel the nation to global economic dominance.
