Origin, setting and basin type
Forth Basin is located in the eastern part of Midland Valley of Scotland. Fault Controlled Dinantian (Lower Carboniferous) sequence is present in the Forth Basin. This sequence is overlain by thinner Namurian and Westphalian sediments.
As far as the history and origin is concerned the area of Central North Sea has a history of explorations and discoveries related to the field of geology. Most of the discoveries have been made in the upper Jurassic shallow marine sands and Palaeocene submarine fan sands. In the regions having Jurassic source rock carboniferous sediments are often absent. But the possibility of occurrence of carboniferous source rocks cannot be ignored in the eastern part of Mid North Sea High. Coal measures and sediments of hydrocarbon are more likely to be discovered in the area and most probably these will be accumulated in the deeper early carboniferous sediments. Moreover, these may also contain required hydrocarbons within the Forth Basin. Early carboniferous sediments in the Forth Basin are the main focus of this study.

The Kinneswood formation includes predominately cross bedded sandstones which are already deposited in river channels and associated over bank deposits laid down on flood plains. Grey mudstones and siltstones including isolated nodules and beds of ferroan dolomite are present in Ballagan Formation. As far as Clyde Sand stone formation is concerned it include fine to coarse grained sandstones which are predominately white and containing beds of mudstone. It also includes some pebbly sections too. In Fife Ness Formation the sand stones are arranged in fining-upward cycles. The sediments are deposited in the fluvial and lacustrine environments. Anstruther formation has cycles of mudstone, siltstone and sandstone.
