Examples of CNN and BBC World can be taken, which are news channel continuously reporting world news in the West, and are making sure that no news reaches in a delayed manner. At the same time, the opposite kind of work is seen undertaken by the media in the Middle East where channels like Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya satellite television create a public sphere which is pan-Arabic in nature and whole different level of political schooling takes place. However, what has to be noticed is that the undertakings, the views and the work are now available to the general mass through the internet, and every common man can view what is being happening around the world. Thus, if negativity is promoted by the social media that is what is read and understood by the public and in case the media is playing a positive role, the public reads about the other part of the world in a positive manner (Patterson and Wilkins, 2011).
Therefore, the role of media is a crucial one when it comes to the cross cultural communication, simply because one part of the world does not know much about the other side of the world. It will only believe what it is told. If the media portrays a particular culture as bad, it will be perceived by the other part if the world as bad and vice versa because people do not have any information or intellectually positive response for a distant land unless and until it is created for them, which is exactly what media can do.
One of the major and the most influential example that can be given where media is said to have promoted the clash between two civilizations, and that it has been responsible for the penetration of the differences between the two that is between the American states and the Middle East. The media market of each side has clashed and a negative imagine of either has been portrayed. The media productions of Western cultural have portrayed the Arabs and the people settled in those areas in a not-so-positive light which have created strong emotions in the hearts of the westerners which are negative and illicitly strong, and at the same time the Middle East too have made misperceptions about the West which are showed and displayed by the media in their countries.
It needs to be understood that with the growing world, the media is becoming one of the most powerful sources of information about every sphere. The impact of news affects people’s responses towards the other part of world which is clearly seen between the hostilities which are held between the countries of the Middle East and the countries of the West. It can be quoted “There are differences in the way that people who identify with different cultures, based on both national identity and gender, manage their communicative behaviors within SNSs [social network sites]” (Soproni and Horga, 2012).
Media also progresses in the form of social media, such as the different kinds of networking sites; they promote interaction between different kinds of people all over the world and help them in communicating with each other directly. One very significant example of this is the creation of Facebook in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg; it has brought together people all over the world for better interaction. About 500 million people use this networking site, whereas the world population is said to be that of 6.8 billion. Thus, it can be said that apart from the main stream of media, the social media too has been garnering and supporting the cross cultural communication by providing people with a common platform of interaction. The internet can be used as a medium of communication and collaboration and through this kind of an interaction on the social media, people can get to know more about the different cultures directly from the person belonging to this kind of a culture and not through news channels which often get politically influenced and create negative images about the other cultures like it has been discussed above already.
YouTube is another example where social media is being used for interaction, as people from different cultures upload videos which can be viewed by people all over the world and this promotes effective and positive communication.
Thus, one can say that media is the communication builder for people all across the world belonging to different cultures. However, at the same time, it is seen that under political influence the media tends to get diverted from its main objective and creates images which do not garner positive response from people. Thus, media actually plays a very important role in cross cultural communication across the globe.
