Firstly, absence of team member highlights lack of leadership influence. The leader in the team is not able to motivate all the team members to contribute to achieve the goals. This lack of leadership in binding the team together impacted the achievement of team goals.
Another important point to note is that the leader has little influence on the decision making. The decision making has largely been governed by arriving at consensus. It has been pointed out that there was apprehension that it is difficult to achieve the goal in the second simulation impacting the motivation of the team. The role of leader in such a situation becomes important as the leader gives direction to the team and uplifts the motivation level. The leader ensures that the people do not form small groups to discuss the situation. This creates complexity in decision making.
The lack of leadership had huge impact on the achievement of team goals. This is because if the leader is ineffective, the members focus more on individual goals rather than fulfilling the goals of the team. This can also be seen in the results as there is higher increase in achieving the individual goals rather than team goals. This is because in the second simulation the leadership had significant role was lacking. Long discussions with no outcome impacted the motivation and with no leader to take command, the expected level of goals could not be achieved. A leader has to synergize the conflict and ensure that unidirectional viewpoint is there. A task focused leader is quite effective in both highly favorable and highly unfavorable situations. Thus long discussions could be reduced which could have helped the group more than the democratic approach that has been employed.
