In day to day life people generally make use of the terms ‘group’ and ‘team’ interchangeably without really realizing that both these terms have specific meaning and cannot replace each other. On one hand a group refers to a number of people who interact with each other or influence each other and on the other hand, a team refers to a group of people who work together to achieve some common objectives. In other words, a team may be considered as a group but a group cannot be considered as a team.
Groups are of different types – Primary, secondary, formal or informal. Moreover, they have certain characteristics like – size (three or more individuals constitute a group), influence (members of a group have influence on each other’s actions, thoughts, beliefs, etc.) and last but not the least a goal orientation. However, if we analyze a team, it does not have any classification as such but some of its important characteristics are that members of a team are more closely associated (on a long term basis) with each other and together feel more responsible for the common objectives that as a team they have been assigned. Moreover, team performance depends on synergy among the team members, the kind of communication they have as well as mutual understanding between the team members (Mannix, E.A., 2003, pp 34).
