Peer assessment is a new inclusion in the student assessment procedure which is followed by only a handful of professional degree institutes and universities. In the very basic form of peer assessment it offers some great advantages in student assessment procedure. However, there are some disadvantages of this assessment as well which needs to be considered and avoided.
The basic approach behind peer-assessment procedure is to let the fellow students of a candidate assess the student on the basis of a predetermined and listed criteria. The peer assessment process generally involves a group of students assessing each-other and in the end an average value from the awarded marks by students is taken into consideration in awarding grades to the student for degree programme (Hanrahan & Isaacs, 2001).
The peer assessment process is a great tool to assess the team-work abilities and influence of a student on the fellow students. However, there are some grave concerns associated with the inclusion of this procedure in degree courses. Such concerns require an efficient guideline to be predetermined to avoid the concerns or minimize the risks (Fagerholm & Vihavainen, 2013). Some concerns with the peer assessment program are listed below:
• Increased workload on teachers
• Reluctance among students in judging their peers
• Possibility of discrimination by student ‘gang-up’ against one student
The process of peer assessment comes with some grave concerns associated with it. Most of these concerns can be avoided completely or partially by adopting a strict and through guidelines for peer-assessment.
Peer assessment is a new trend in the education industry. It is a powerful tool for assessment of students not only for what skills they have learned during the degree programme, but also for their ability to communicate with a team of fellow workers and ability to express their ideas.
